This week, I am going to tell you about my house.
My house is falling apart. There are a lot of things that need fixing. If I don’t do what needs to be done soon, I won’t have a house anymore.
My house needs to be fixed!
First of all, my kitchen has a problem. The faucet has a leak. I like water and everything, but I just can’t sleep at night with that “drip, drip, drip” of a leaky faucet. Ugh! My faucet really needs fixing.
This leaky faucet needs to be fixed!
Secondly, some kids were playing baseball and they hit the ball through my window. Now my window is broken and needs to be replaced. Hopefully their parents will pay for it.

My window needs replacing.
Third, the light bulb in my living room has been flickering on and off for weeks now. It shocked me when I touched it. Ouch! I think the bulb might need tightening, or the whole lamp might need replacing.
And finally, the walls of my house are a little bit crooked. They might need to be straightened. I am going to call an expert tomorrow.
The walls need a little straightening.
THE GRAMMAR
Need is a special verb in the PASSIVE. Unlike other verbs it can be followed by (verb) + ing, especially when we are talking about fixing, repairing or replacing things.
So we can say either…
NEED + BE + PAST PARTICIPLE
My house needs to be fixed!
Now my window is broken and needs to be replaced.
The light bulb might need to be replaced.
…or
NEED + (VERB)ING
My faucet really needs fixing.
I think the bulb might need tightening.
The walls need a little straightening.
