December in Cincinnati https://conversa.edu/december-in-cincinnati/ Tue, 05 Dec 2017 18:35:07 +0000 http://conversa.edu/?p=4258

December in Cincinnati

Cincinnati becomes alive in December. Downtown is filled with bright lights, ice skating, Christmas Village and much more. Many companies host Christmas parties for their employees, streets are filled with shoppers and there is music, theater and lively entertainment on the weekends everywhere.

Conversa also has special activities. We will go to Fountain Square to ice skate on December 13. On December 5, 6 and 7 students are making Christmas ornaments to put on our Christmas Tree.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and wish you were here to celebrate with us!

Americans like to borrow and invent: Halloween https://conversa.edu/americans-like-borrow-invent-halloween/ https://conversa.edu/americans-like-borrow-invent-halloween/#comments Fri, 10 Nov 2017 19:07:21 +0000 http://conversa.edu/?p=4225 The United States is made up of many nationalities and indigenous peoples. Each group has their holidays and traditions. What gets celebrated varies over time. Conversa, having students and teachers from around the world celebrates holidays and mixes traditions. Last October 31 we celebrated Halloween at Conversa. We had a costume contest where groups of students had 5 minutes to dress one student. Then the costumes were judged for the best and second best. Afterwards we borrowed the Mexican custom of the Piñada. We filled the skull-shaped Piñada with candy and chocolate and took turns taking blindfolded wacks at the defenseless skull. It was too much fun.

Happy May Day! https://conversa.edu/happy-may-day/ Mon, 01 May 2017 15:21:10 +0000 http://conversa.edu/?p=4145 May 1st is one of a series of spring days celebrated in the United States.

On Groundhog Day (February 2, 2017) a burrowing rodent about the size of a housecat is said to determine whether spring has begun or winter will continue.

The spring equinox (March 20, 2017) is the official first day of spring.  Changes in the amount of sunlight and the angle of the sun result in warmer temperatures.  Soon thereafter trees begin to expand their leaves and flowers appear.  On the Sunday after the next full moon Easter (April 16, 2017) is celebrated.  Spring is reflected in the symbols of Easter:  lambs, chicks, baby rabbits, and eggs.

Next comes Earth Day (April 22, 2017), when many people volunteer their time to clean natural areas, rivers, and roadsides.  Arbor Day (April 28, 2017) follows.  It is a day when many people volunteer to plant trees in their communities.

Finally, May Day (May 1, 2017), originated with Floralia (the festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers).  It is also considered a celebration of spring and fertility.    May Day is often celebrated by a dance in which children (or adults) weave ribbons around a tall pole (the May Pole).

Earth Day and Arbor Day both originated in the United States.  The other spring holidays have origins in Europe during pre-Christian times.  Groundhog Day occurs halfway between winter solstice (the shortest amount of daylight during the year) and the spring equinox.

Even if you choose not to celebrate spring on these days you will probably experience “spring fever” if you live in a place that has four seasons.  This is not a physical illness, but a longing to be outside to enjoy warmer spring days after a long, cold winter.

Bockfest: Cincinnati’s Carnival! https://conversa.edu/bockfest-cincinnatis-carnival/ Mon, 27 Feb 2017 21:05:04 +0000 http://conversa.edu/?p=4107 Bockfest is Cincinnati’s equivalent of Carnival.  Bock is the German word for male goat but is a type of beer made by German monks that they drank during the lenten season to get additional nourishment during the long fast in preparation for Easter.   It’s celebrated the first weekend of March.  This year is the 25th anniversary.  The parade starts a block from Conversa and our students and teachers will be in the parade.  Come join us of a fun, crazy time.  There will be music, food, bock beer and many great floats in the parade.  Meet at Conversa at 5 pm.  For more information, see http://www.bockfest.com/parade.html

Superbowl of American Football https://conversa.edu/superbowl-american-football/ Tue, 07 Feb 2017 14:52:06 +0000 http://conversa.edu/?p=4085 American football is played in the fall and winter every year on a football field. It consists of four 15 minute periods with each team having 11 players on the field for each play. Each team tries to score by getting the football to the opposing team’s end zone by either running or passing the football. The National Football League (NFL) is made up of 32 teams that pay players ridiculous amounts of money to sacrifice their bodies every week to win a game. Every team has the same goal, win the Superbowl. In the regular season, each team plays 16 games to determine who plays in the playoffs. After 3 weeks of playoffs, the teams that will play in the Superbowl are determined. It is common in the United States to have or go to a Superbowl party. Some people only watch for the commercials on TV but many others cheer loud for their team.

How to make friends and meet people in the United States and Cincinnati https://conversa.edu/make-friends-meet-people-united-states-cincinnati/ Mon, 23 Jan 2017 14:32:42 +0000 http://conversa.edu/?p=4069 Nowadays it is easy to move to a new city or country and make new friends. Social networks make our life better when we are moving to a new place and we don’t know anything about our new neighborhood.

In the United States, the most common way to meet people is by internet, specifically, social networks. If you are thinking about visiting Cincinnati, the best choice is through dating applications like Match, Elite singles, ourtime.com, Cincinnati professional singles, etc. These options are good when you want to go on a date and have fun at night. Now, if you are interested in just friends, Meetup is the most recommended to meet people near you who share you interests. You can find and join groups unified by a common interest like: hobbies, family, health & wellness, sport & fitness, learning, food & drink, language & culture, etc. If you don’t speak very well English, Meetup is still the best option for you.
