Improve your Test Taking Skills

This class is designed to prepare students to take the TOEFL and IELTS test, as well as other tests like the TOEIC and Pearson Versant tests. It covers all the sections of the exam – reading, listening, speaking, and writing – as well as test-taking strategies and tips.  The class consists of two, 4-week sessions.  The first week gives an overview of the test with a full-length diagnostic test on Thursday.  Mondays and Wednesdays focus on Reading and Writing skills while Tuesdays and Thursdays cover Writing and Speaking skills needed for the tests.  Students will take a total of three full-length tests over two months.

Course objectives:

The course objective is for the students to practice and improve upon the English skills needed to pass the TOEFL and IELTS exams and learn test-taking strategies that will help them not only with the exam, but future academic objectives as well.

  • Practice taking sections of the test on computer.
  • Learn to analyze readings within a time limit.
  • Listen to audio to understand content, meaning and understand referents and signals.
  • Improve your speaking abilities with stress patterns, intonation, linking words, etc.
  • Write cohesive paragraphs, concise sentences and practice writing under a time limit.
